1983: Return of The Jedi
On this day in 1983, Return of the Jedi broke all opening day records.
1952: The African Queen
On this day in 1952, The African Queen opened.
In the 1950’s people didn’t need fat burners, because they could simply walk out their door and exercise. Something that’s completely lost on this generation is doing things that are good for you.
Can you imagine being out filming in those costumes like they wore in the movies? I would be dying. Literally. Then again, I tend to lose weight just walking out to check the mail.
1971: Bad Apples
On this day in 1971, the Osmonds began a five-week stay at number one with “One Bad Apple”. Talking about bad apples. These guys all looked like they needed acne creams but they were stoked and filled with energy, which was the highlight of watching their performances. See, I told you the 1970’s were not nice to us. Things could have been worse though. Imagine Tiny Tim recording a Bee Gee’s cover. Yeah, I know.
1953: Peter Pan
On this day in 1953, Walt Disney’s version of Peter Pan opened in New York City. We have a copy of Peter Pan in our movie closet, along with over 300 other kids movies. If I had a barcode scanner I could scan them all into some sort of database so I could keep track of them all.
The sequels to Peter Pan are not nearly as good as the original.
1955: Elvis Presley
I’m sure everyone was smoking cigars after this deal.
In 1955, RCA purchased the recording contract of Elvis Presley from Sun Records for the then astronomical sum of $35,000. Elvis would become RCA’s biggest selling recording artist. His first gold record was Heartbreak Hotel, recorded in January 1956.
When I get the chance, I shop for cigars online, because you can never have too many good cigars waiting for those perfect deals.
1958: The Old Man And The Sea
I was sitting here tonight trying to decide if I wanted to write a colon cleanse review or watch a movie. The movie won.
So what should I watch? I think I’ll watch “The Old Man And The Sea” which was released on this day in 1958.
An old Cuban fisherman goes out to get fish, something he has not done well at for the last three months. He catches a huge one which is devoured by sharks before he can land it.
No Lights In Georgia
On this day in 1973, “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” hit number one. It was the only hit song from an awesome performer, Vicki Lawrence.
